IA
Ye batter down the lion's denB
But yet the lordly beast g'oes freeC
And ye shall hear his roar againB
From mountain height from lowland glenB
From sandy shore and reedy fenB
Where'er a band of freeborn menB
Rears sacred shrines to libertyC

The serpent scales the eagle's nestD
And yet the royal bird in airE
Triumphant wins the mountain's crestD
And sworn for strife yet takes his restD
And plumes to calm his ruffled breastD
Till like a storm bolt from the westD
He strikes the invader in his lairE

What's loss of den or nest or homeF
If like the lion free to goG
If like the eagle wing'd to roamF
We span the rock and breast the foamF
Still watchful for the hour of doomH
When with the knell of thunder boomH
We bound upon the serpent foeG

-
Oh noble sons of lion heartI
Oh gallant hearts of eagle wingJ
What though your batter'd bulwarks partI
Your nest be spoiled by reptile artI
Your souls on wings of hate shall startI
For vengeance and with lightning dartI
Rend the foul serpent ere he stingJ
-

-
Your battered den your shattered nestD
Was but the lion's crouching placeK
It heard his roar and bore his crestD
His or the eagle's place of restD
But not the soul in either breastD
This arms the twain by freedom bless'dD
To save and to avenge their raceK
