The Ex Official's Lament Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEDEFGFGHBHBIJIJ FKFKLMLMNONOPQRQFFNF SFSFTFTFUBUBVJVJAlas alas my power is gone | A |
I thought 'twould last for ever | B |
But now 'tis over I must own | C |
They've done it very clever | B |
I could have feather'd well my nest | D |
If I had been permitted | E |
To that intent I did my best | D |
To have my friend acquitted | E |
'Congratulatory address' | F |
I also did procure him | G |
Among my influential class | F |
And thought this must secure him | G |
In fact I left no means untried | H |
To smother up the matter | B |
And on my influence relied | H |
To stop the diggers' chatter | B |
But rumours soon got spread about | I |
Of this our camp proceeding | J |
And very soon we all found out | I |
That discontent was breeding | J |
At last the diggers on the place | F |
Determined to assemble | K |
Which when I saw I must confess | F |
I inwardly did tremble | K |
And yet to awe the vulgar crowd | L |
I got the troopers round me | M |
When groans and hisses long and loud | L |
Completely did confound me | M |
My brethren then with all their might | N |
Endeavoured to allay them | O |
When lo it rose to such a height | N |
No speech of ours could stay them | O |
I always thought the common herd | P |
Should render blind submission | Q |
Should ne'er have once presumed or dared | R |
To question our decision | Q |
But now they talk about their 'rights' | F |
As much as their superiors | F |
Though 'Gentlemen' I'm certain quite | N |
All view them as inferiors | F |
Could we but get them down once more | S |
We'd hold them in such fetters | F |
As would restrain them evermore | S |
From meddling with their betters | F |
But now alas I see no way | T |
To gratify my wishes | F |
With all our schemes we've lost the day | T |
For getting loaves and fishes | F |
Intelligence is gaining ground | U |
We can hold out no longer | B |
Where'er I cast my eyes around | U |
The 'league' is getting stronger | B |
Left to our fate we can but grieve | V |
To see their ranks increasing | J |
Oh could we have have a short reprieve | V |
The diggers to be fleecing | J |
