Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHIHGBGB JKLKMNLN JKLKOBPB

Why look the distant mountainsA
So gloomy and so drearB
Are rain clouds passing o er themC
Or is the tempest nearB
No shadow of the tempestD
Is there nor wind nor rainE
Tis Charon that is passing byF
With all his gloomy trainE
-
The young men march before himG
In all their strength and prideH
The tender little infantsI
They totter by his sideH
The old men walk behind himG
And earnestly they prayB
Both old and young imploring himG
To grant some brief delayB
-
O Charon halt we pray theeJ
Beside some little townK
Or near some sparkling fountainL
Where the waters wimple downK
The old will drink and be refreshedM
The young the disc will flingN
And the tender little childrenL
Pluck flowers beside the springN
-
I will not stay my journeyJ
Nor halt by any townK
Near any sparkling fountainL
Where the waters wimple downK
The mothers coming to the wellO
Would know the babes they boreB
The wives would clasp their husbandsP
Nor could I part them moreB
