In the silence of my chamberA
When the night is still and deepB
And the drowsy heave of oceanC
Mutters in its charmed sleepB
-
Oft I hear the angel voicesD
That have thrilled me long agoE
Voices of my lost companionsF
Lying deep beneath the snowE
-
O the garden I rememberA
In the gay and sunny springG
When our laughter made the thicketsH
And the arching alleys ringG
-
O the merry burst of gladnessH
O the soft and tender toneI
O the whisper never utteredJ
Save to one fond ear aloneI
-
O the light of life that sparkledK
In those bright and bounteous eyesH
O the blush of happy beautyL
Tell tale of the heart's surpriseH
-
O the radiant light that girdledL
Field and forest land and seaL
When we all were young togetherA
And the earth was new to meL
-
Where are now the flowers we tendedL
Withered broken branch and stemM
Where are now the hopes we cherishedL
Scattered to the winds with themM
-
For ye too were flowers ye dear onesH
Nursed in hope and reared in loveN
Looking fondly ever upwardL
To the clear blue heaven aboveN
-
Smiling on the sun that cheered usH
Rising lightly from the rainO
Never folding up your freshnessH
Save to give it forth againP
-
Never shaken save by accentsH
From a tongue that was not freeL
As the modest blossom tremblesH
At the wooing of the beeL
-
O 'tis sad to lie and reckonC
All the days of faded youthQ
All the vows that we believed inR
All the words we spoke in truthQ
-
Severed were it severed onlyL
By an idle thought of strifeS
Such as time might knit togetherA
Not the broken chord of lifeS
-
O my heart that once so trulyL
Kept another's time and tuneT
Heart that kindled in the spring tideL
Look around thee in the noonT
-
Where are they who gave the impulseH
To thy earliest thought and flowE
Look around the ruined gardenC
All are withered dropped or lowE
-
Seek the birth place of the lilyL
Dearer to the boyish dreamU
Than the golden cups of EdenC
Floating on its slumbrous streamU
-
Never more shalt thou behold herA
She the noblest fairest bestL
She that rose in fullest beautyL
Like a queen above the restL
-
Only still I keep her imageV
As a thought that cannot dieL
He who raised the shade of HelenC
Had no greater power than IL
-
O I fling my spirit backwardL
And I pass o'er years of painO
All I loved is rising round meL
All the lost returns againP
-
Blow for ever blow ye breezesH
Warmly as ye did beforeW
Bloom again ye happy gardensH
With the radiant tints of yoreW
-
Warble out in spray and thicketL
All ye choristers unseenX
Let the leafy woodland echoE
With an anthem to its queenX
-
Lo she cometh in her beautyL
Stately with a Juno graceH
Raven locks Madonna braidedL
O'er her sweet and blushing faceH
-
Eyes of deepest violet beamingG
With the love that knows not shameY
Lips that thrill my inmost beingG
With the utterance of a nameY
-
And I bend the knee before herA
As a captive ought to bowZ
Pray thee listen to my pleadingG
Sovereign of my soul art thouZ
-
O my dear and gentle ladyL
Let me show thee all my painO
Ere the words that late were prisonedL
Sink into my heart againP
-
Love they say is very fearfulA2
Ere its curtain be withdrawnB2
Trembling at the thought of errorA
As the shadows scare the fawnB2
-
Love hath bound me to thee ladyL
Since the well remembered dayL
When I first beheld thee comingG
In the light of lustrous MayL
-
Not a word I dared to utterA
More than he who long agoE
Saw the heavenly shapes descendingG
Over Ida's slopes of snowE
-
When a low and solemn musicC2
Floated through the listening groveD2
And the throstle's song was silencedL
And the doling of the doveN
-
When immortal beauty openedL
All its grace to mortal sightL
And the awe of worship blendedL
With the throbbing of delightL
-
As the shepherd stood before themM
Trembling in the Phrygian dellE2
Even so my soul and beingG
Owned the magic of the spellE2
-
And I watched thee ever fondlyL
Watched thee dearest from afarF2
With the mute and humble homageV
Of the Indian to a starF2
-
Thou wert still the Lady FloraG2
In her morning garb of bloomH2
Where thou wert was light and gloryL
Where thou wert not dearth and gloomH2
-
So for many a day I followedL
For a long and weary whileI2
Ere my heart rose up to bless theeL
For the yielding of a smileI2
-
Ere thy words were few and brokenC
As they answered back to mineJ2
Ere my lips had power to thank theeL
For the gift vouchsafed by thineJ2
-
Then a mighty gush of passionC
Through my inmost being ranK2
Then my older life was endedL
And a dearer course beganK2
-
Dearer O I cannot tell theeL
What a load was swept awayL
What a world of doubt and darknessH
Faded in the dawning dayL
-
All my error all my weaknessH
All my vain delusions fledL
Hope again revived and gladnessH
Waved its wings above my headL
-
Like the wanderer of the desertL
When across the dreary sandL
Breathes the perfume from the thicketsH
Bordering on the promised landL
-
When afar he sees the palm treesH
Cresting o'er the lonely wellE2
When he hears the pleasant tinkleA2
Of the distant camel's bellE2
-
So a fresh and glad emotionC
Rose within my swelling breastL
And I hurried swiftly onwardsH
To the haven of my restL
-
Thou wert there with word and welcomeL2
With thy smile so purely sweetL
And I laid my heart before theeL
Laid it darling at thy feetL
-
O ye words that sound so hollowE
As I now recall your toneI
What are ye but empty echoesH
Of a passion crushed and goneB2
-
Wherefore should I seek to kindleA2
Light when all around is gloomH2
Wherefore should I raise a phantomL2
O'er the dark and silent tombH2
-
Early wert thou taken MaryL
In thy fair and glorious primeM2
Ere the bees had ceased to murmurA
Through the umbrage of the limeM2
-
Buds were blowing waters flowingG
Birds were singing on the treeL
Every thing was bright and glowingG
When the angels came for theeL
-
Death had laid aside his terrorA
And he found thee calm and mildL
Lying in thy robes of whitenessH
Like a pure and stainless childL
-
Hardly had the mountain violetL
Spread its blossoms on the sodL
Ere they laid the turf above theeL
And thy spirit rose to GodL
-
Early wert thou taken MaryL
And I know 'tis vain to weepB
Tears of mine can never wake theeL
From thy sad and silent sleepB
-
O away my thoughts are earthwardL
Not asleep my love art thouZ
Dwelling in the land of gloryL
With the saints and angels nowZ
-
Brighter fairer far than livingG
With no trace of woe or painO
Robed in everlasting beautyL
Shall I see thee once againP
-
By the light that never fadethZ
Underneath eternal skiesH
When the dawn of resurrectionC
Breaks o'er deathless ParadiseH
