Lay Of The Lover's Friend, The Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCACDEFEGHIH JKLKJMNMGHIH OPCPQRQRGHIH STJTUAVAGHIH CAAAWCXCGHIH

Air The days we went a gipsyingA
-
I would all womankind were deadB
Or banished o'er the seaC
For they have been a bitter plagueA
These last six weeks to meC
It is not that I'm touched myselfD
For that I do not fearE
No female face hath shown me graceF
For many a bygone yearE
But 'tis the most infernal boreG
Of all the bores I knowH
To have a friend who's lost his heartI
A short time agoH
-
Whene'er we steam it to BlackwallJ
Or down to Greenwich runK
To quaff the pleasant cider cupL
And feed on fish and funK
Or climb the slopes of Richmond HillJ
To catch a breath of airM
Then for my sins he straight beginsN
To rave about his fairM
Oh 'tis the most tremendous boreG
Of all the bores I knowH
To have a friend who's lost his heartI
A short time agoH
-
In vain you pour into his earO
Your own confiding griefP
In vain you claim his sympathyC
In vain you ask reliefP
In vain you try to rouse him byQ
Joke repartee or quizR
His sole reply's a burning sighQ
And What a mind it isR
O Lord it is the greatest boreG
Of all the bores I knowH
To have a friend who's lost his heartI
A short time agoH
-
I've heard her thoroughly describedS
A hundred times I'm sureT
And all the while I've tried to smileJ
And patiently endureT
He waxes strong upon his pangsU
And potters o'er his grogA
And still I say in a playful wayV
Why you're a lucky dogA
But oh it is the heaviest boreG
Of all the bores I knowH
To have a friend who's lost his heartI
A short time agoH
-
I really wish he'd do like meC
When I was young and strongA
I formed a passion every weekA
But never kept it longA
But he has not the sportive moodW
That always rescued meC
And so I would all women couldX
Be banished o'er the seaC
For 'tis the most egregious boreG
Of all the bores I knowH
To have a friend who's lost his heartI
A short time agoH
