Ay gloriously thou standest thereA
Beautiful boundles firmamentB
That swelling wide o'er earth and airA
And round the horizon bentB
With thy bright vault and sapphire wallC
Dost overhang and circle allC
-
Far far below thee tall old treesD
Arise and piles built up of oldB
And hills whose ancient summits freezeD
In the fierce light and coldB
The eagle soars his utmost heightB
Yet far thou stretchest o'er his flightB
-
Thou hast thy frowns with thee on highE
The storm has made his airy seatB
Beyond that soft blue curtain lieE
His stores of hail and sleetB
Thence the consuming lightnings breakF
There the strong hurricanes awakeF
-
Yet art thou prodigal of smilesG
Smiles sweeter than thy frowns are sternH
Earth sends from all her thousand islesG
A shout at thy returnH
The glory that comes down from theeI
Bathes in deep joy the land and seaI
-
The sun the gorgeous sun is thineJ
The pomp that brings and shuts the dayB
The clouds that round him change and shineJ
The airs that fan his wayB
Thence look the thoughtful stars and thereA
The meek moon walks the silent airA
-
The sunny Italy may boastB
The beauteous tints that flush her skiesK
And lovely round the Grecian coastB
May thy blue pillars riseK
I only know how fair they standB
Around my own beloved landB
-
And they are fair a charm is theirsL
That earth the proud green earth has notB
With all the forms and hues and airsL
That haunt her sweetest spotB
We gaze upon thy calm pure sphereM
And read of Heaven's eternal yearM
-
Oh when amid the throng of menN
The heart grows sick of hollow mirthO
How willingly we turn us thenN
Away from this cold earthO
And look into thy azure breastB
For seats of innocence and restB
