The Murdered Traveller. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EEEE FGFG HEHE IEIE JKJL EMEN EBEB

When spring to woods and wastes aroundA
Brought bloom and joy againB
The murdered traveller's bones were foundA
Far down a narrow glenB
-
The fragrant birch above him hungC
Her tassels in the skyD
And many a vernal blossom sprungC
And nodded careless byD
-
The red bird warbled as he wroughtE
His hanging nest o'erheadE
And fearless near the fatal spotE
Her young the partridge ledE
-
But there was weeping far awayF
And gentle eyes for himG
With watching many an anxious dayF
Were sorrowful and dimG
-
They little knew who loved him soH
The fearful death he metE
When shouting o'er the desert snowH
Unarmed and hard besetE
-
Nor how when round the frosty poleI
The northern dawn was redE
The mountain wolf and wild cat stoleI
To banquet on the deadE
-
Nor how when strangers found his bonesJ
They dressed the hasty bierK
And marked his grave with nameless stonesJ
Unmoistened by a tearL
-
But long they looked and feared and weptE
Within his distant homeM
And dreamed and started as they sleptE
For joy that he was comeN
-
Long long they looked but never spiedE
His welcome step againB
Nor knew the fearful death he diedE
Far down that narrow glenB
