The Greek Partisan Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEAEA FGFGHIHIJFJF KLKCMNMOPAPA

Our free flag is dancingA
In the free mountain airB
And burnished arms are glancingA
And warriors gathering thereB
And fearless is the little trainC
Whose gallant bosoms shield itD
The blood that warms their hearts shall stainC
That banner ere they yield itD
Each dark eye is fixed on earthE
And brief each solemn greetingA
There is no look nor sound of mirthE
Where those stern men are meetingA
-
They go to the slaughterF
To strike the sudden blowG
And pour on earth like waterF
The best blood of the foeG
To rush on them from rock and heightH
And clear the narrow valleyI
Or fire their camp at dead of nightH
And fly before they rallyI
Chains are round our country pressedJ
And cowards have betrayed herF
And we must make her bleeding breastJ
The grave of the invaderF
-
Not till from her fettersK
We raise up Greece againL
And write in bloody lettersK
That tyranny is slainC
Oh not till then the smile shall stealM
Across those darkened facesN
Nor one of all those warriors feelM
His children's dear embracesO
Reap we not the ripened wheatP
Till yonder hosts are flyingA
And all their bravest at our feetP
Like autumn sheaves are lyingA
