The Future Life Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDEF GHGH IJIK LMLM NONO PQPQ RSRS TUVU

How shall I know thee in the sphere which keepsA
The disembodied spirits of the deadB
When all of thee that time could wither sleepsA
And perishes among the dust we treadB
-
For I shall feel the sting of ceaseless painC
If there I meet thy gentle presence notD
Nor hear the voice I love nor read againE
In thy serenest eyes the tender thoughtF
-
Will not thy own meek heart demand me thereG
That heart whose fondest throbs to me were givenH
My name on earth was ever in thy prayerG
Shall it be banished from thy tongue in heavenH
-
In meadows fanned by heaven's life breathing windI
In the resplendence of that glorious sphereJ
And larger movements of the unfettered mindI
Wilt thou forget the love that joined us hereK
-
The love that lived through all the stormy pastL
And meekly with my harsher nature boreM
And deeper grew and tenderer to the lastL
Shall it expire with life and be no moreM
-
A happier lot than mine and larger lightN
Await thee there for thou hast bowed thy willO
In cheerful homage to the rule of rightN
And lovest all and renderest good for illO
-
For me the sordid cares in which I dwellP
Shrink and consume my heart as heat the scrollQ
And wrath has left its scar that fire of hellP
Has left its frightful scar upon my soulQ
-
Yet though thou wear'st the glory of the skyR
Wilt thou not keep the same beloved nameS
The same fair thoughtful brow and gentle eyeR
Lovelier in heaven's sweet climate yet the sameS
-
Shalt thou not teach me in that calmer homeT
The wisdom that I learned so ill in thisU
The wisdom which is love till I becomeV
Thy fit companion in that land of blissU
