The Disinterred Warrior. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEDE FGFGHIHI JKJKLMLM NOPOBQBQ RSTSUVUV

Gather him to his grave againA
And solemnly and softly layB
Beneath the verdure of the plainC
The warrior's scattered bones awayB
Pay the deep reverence taught of oldD
The homage of man's heart to deathE
Nor dare to trifle with the mouldD
Once hallowed by the Almighty's breathE
-
The soul hath quickened every partF
That remnant of a martial browG
Those ribs that held the mighty heartF
That strong arm strong no longer nowG
Spare them each mouldering relic spareH
Of God's own image let them restI
Till not a trace shall speak of whereH
The awful likeness was impressedI
-
For he was fresher from the handJ
That formed of earth the human faceK
And to the elements did standJ
In nearer kindred than our raceK
In many a flood to madness tossedL
In many a storm has been his pathM
He hid him not from heat or frostL
But met them and defied their wrathM
-
Then they were kind the forests hereN
Rivers and stiller waters paidO
A tribute to the net and spearP
Of the red ruler of the shadeO
Fruits on the woodland branches layB
Roots in the shaded soil belowQ
The stars looked forth to teach his wayB
The still earth warned him of the foeQ
-
A noble race but they are goneR
With their old forests wide and deepS
And we have built our homes uponT
Fields where their generations sleepS
Their fountains slake our thirst at noonU
Upon their fields our harvest wavesV
Our lovers woo beneath their moonU
Then let us spare at least their gravesV
