Living Lost, The Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCDD EFEFGGHH IJIJ KKBB LMLMNNOO

Matron the children of whose loveA
Each to his grave in youth have passedB
And now the mould is heaped aboveA
The dearest and the lastB
Bride who dost wear the widow's veilC
Before the wedding flowers are paleC
Ye deem the human heart enduresD
No deeper bitterer grief than yoursD
-
Yet there are pangs of keener woE
Of which the sufferers never speakF
Nor to the world's cold pity showE
The tears that scald the cheekF
Wrung from their eyelids by the shameG
And guilt of those they shrink to nameG
Whom once they loved with cheerful willH
And love though fallen and branded stillH
-
Weep ye who sorrow for the deadI
Thus breaking hearts their pain relieveJ
And graceful are the tears ye shedI
And honoured ye who grieveJ
-
The praise of those who sleep in earthK
The pleasant memory of their worthK
The hope to meet when life is pastB
Shall heal the tortured mind at lastB
-
But ye who for the living lostL
That agony in secret bearM
Who shall with soothing words accostL
The strength of your despairM
Grief for your sake is scorn for themN
Whom ye lament and all condemnN
And o'er the world of spirits liesO
A gloom from which ye turn your eyesO
