FROM THE SPANISH OF LUIS PONCE DE LEONA
-
-
Region of life and lightB
Land of the good whose earthly toils are o'erC
Nor frost nor heat may blightB
Thy vernal beauty fertile shoreD
Yielding thy blessed fruits for evermoreD
-
There without crook or slingE
Walks the good shepherd blossoms white and redF
Round his meek temples clingE
And to sweet pastures ledF
His own loved flock beneath his eye is fedF
-
He guides and near him theyG
Follow delighted for he makes them goH
Where dwells eternal MayG
And heavenly roses blowH
Deathless and gathered but again to growH
-
He leads them to the heightB
Named of the infinite and long sought GoodI
And fountains of delightB
And where his feet have stoodI
Springs up along the way their tender foodJ
-
And when in the mid skiesK
The climbing sun has reached his highest boundL
Reposing as he liesK
With all his flock aroundL
He witches the still air with numerous soundL
-
From his sweet lute flow forthM
Immortal harmonies of power to stillN
All passions born of earthO
And draw the ardent willN
Its destiny of goodness to fulfilN
-
Might but a little partP
A wandering breath of that high melodyQ
Descend into my heartP
And change it till it beQ
Transformed and swallowed up oh love in theeQ
-
Ah then my soul should knowH
Beloved where thou liest at noon of dayG
And from this place of woeH
Released should take its wayG
To mingle with thy flock and never strayG
