In Memory Of John Lothrop Motley Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABABABCDCDCD

SLEEP Motley with the great of ancient daysA
Who wrote for all the years that yet shall beB
Sleep with Herodotus whose name and praiseA
Have reached the isles of earth s remotest seaB
Sleep while defiant of the slow decaysA
Of time thy glorious writings speak for theeB
And in the answering heart of millions raiseA
The generous zeal for Right and LibertyB
And should the day o ertake us when at lastC
The silence that ere yet a human penD
Had traced the slenderest record of the pastC
Hushed the primeval languages of menD
Upon our English tongue its spell shall castC
Thy memory shall perish only thenD
