Hymn To The North Star. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACDD EFEFGG HIHIJJ KLKLMM NONOPP QRQSAA TUTUFF

The sad and solemn nightA
Hath yet her multitude of cheerful firesB
The glorious host of lightA
Walk the dark hemisphere till she retiresC
All through her silent watches gliding slowD
Her constellations come and climb the heavens and goD
-
Day too hath many a starE
To grace his gorgeous reign as bright as theyF
Through the blue fields afarE
Unseen they follow in his flaming wayF
Many a bright lingerer as the eve grows dimG
Tells what a radiant troop arose and set with himG
-
And thou dost see them riseH
Star of the Pole and thou dost see them setI
Alone in thy cold skiesH
Thou keep'st thy old unmoving station yetI
Nor join'st the dances of that glittering trainJ
Nor dipp'st thy virgin orb in the blue western mainJ
-
There at morn's rosy birthK
Thou lookest meekly through the kindling airL
And eve that round the earthK
Chases the day beholds thee watching thereL
There noontide finds thee and the hour that callsM
The shapes of polar flame to scale heaven's azure wallsM
-
Alike beneath thine eyeN
The deeds of darkness and of light are doneO
High towards the star lit skyN
Towns blaze the smoke of battle blots the sunO
The night storm on a thousand hills is loudP
And the strong wind of day doth mingle sea and cloudP
-
On thy unaltering blazeQ
The half wrecked mariner his compass lostR
Fixes his steady gazeQ
And steers undoubting to the friendly coastS
And they who stray in perilous wastes by nightA
Are glad when thou dost shine to guide their footsteps rightA
-
And therefore bards of oldT
Sages and hermits of the solemn woodU
Did in thy beams beholdT
A beauteous type of that unchanging goodU
That bright eternal beacon by whose rayF
The voyager of time should shape his heedful wayF
