Green River Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDD EEFFEEGGHHIIAAEE EEJJGGKKLLMMEEEEEE NOEEPPMMEEQQ JJEERRSSTT

When breezes are soft and skies are fairA
I steal an hour from study and careA
And hie me away to the woodland sceneB
Where wanders the stream with waters of greenB
As if the bright fringe of herbs on its brinkC
Had given their stain to the wave they drinkC
And they whose meadows it murmurs throughD
Have named the stream from its own fair hueD
-
Yet pure its waters its shallows are brightE
With coloured pebbles and sparkles of lightE
And clear the depths where its eddies playF
And dimples deepen and whirl awayF
And the plane tree's speckled arms o'ershootE
The swifter current that mines its rootE
Through whose shifting leaves as you walk the hillG
The quivering glimmer of sun and rillG
With a sudden flash on the eye is thrownH
Like the ray that streams from the diamond stoneH
Oh loveliest there the spring days comeI
With blossoms and birds and wild bees' humI
The flowers of summer are fairest thereA
And freshest the breath of the summer airA
And sweetest the golden autumn dayE
In silence and sunshine glides awayE
-
Yet fair as thou art thou shunnest to glideE
Beautiful stream by the village sideE
But windest away from haunts of menJ
To quiet valley and shaded glenJ
And forest and meadow and slope of hillG
Around thee are lonely lovely and stillG
Lonely save when by thy rippling tidesK
From thicket to thicket the angler glidesK
Or the simpler comes with basket and bookL
For herbs of power on thy banks to lookL
Or haply some idle dreamer like meM
To wander and muse and gaze on theeM
Still save the chirp of birds that feedE
On the river cherry and seedy reedE
And thy own wild music gushing outE
With mellow murmur and fairy shoutE
From dawn to the blush of another dayE
Like traveller singing along his wayE
-
That fairy music I never hearN
Nor gaze on those waters so green and clearO
And mark them winding away from sightE
Darkened with shade or flashing with lightE
While o'er them the vine to its thicket clingsP
And the zephyr stoops to freshen his wingsP
But I wish that fate had left me freeM
To wander these quiet haunts with theeM
Till the eating cares of earth should departE
And the peace of the scene pass into my heartE
And I envy thy stream as it glides alongQ
Through its beautiful banks in a trance of songQ
-
Though forced to drudge for the dregs of menJ
And scrawl strange words with the barbarous penJ
And mingle among the jostling crowdE
Where the sons of strife are subtle and loudE
I often come to this quiet placeR
To breathe the airs that ruffle thy faceR
And gaze upon thee in silent dreamS
For in thy lonely and lovely streamS
An image of that calm life appearsT
That won my heart in my greener yearsT
