He stood among a crowd at DromahairA
His heart hung all upon a silken dressB
And he had known at last some tendernessC
Before earth took him to her stony careA
But when a man poured fish into a pileD
It Seemed they raised their little silver headsE
And sang what gold morning or evening shedsE
Upon a woven world forgotten isleD
Where people love beside the ravelled seasF
That Time can never mar a lover's vowsG
Under that woven changeless roof of boughsG
The singing shook him out of his new easeF
-
He wandered by the sands of LissadellD
His mind ran all on money cares and fearsH
And he had known at last some prudent yearsH
Before they heaped his grave under the hillD
But while he passed before a plashy placeI
A lug worm with its grey and muddy mouthJ
Sang that somewhere to north or west or southJ
There dwelt a gay exulting gentle raceI
Under the golden or the silver skiesK
That if a dancer stayed his hungry footL
It seemed the sun and moon were in the fruitM
And at that singing he was no more wiseK
-
He mused beside the well of ScanavinN
He mused upon his mockers without failD
His sudden vengeance were a country taleD
When earthy night had drunk his body inN
But one small knot grass growing by the poolD
Sang where unnecessary cruel voiceO
Old silence bids its chosen race rejoiceO
Whatever ravelled waters rise and fallD
Or stormy silver fret the gold of dayP
And midnight there enfold them like a fleeceQ
And lover there by lover be at peaceQ
The tale drove his fine angry mood awayP
-
He slept under the hill of LugnagallD
And might have known at last unhaunted sleepR
Under that cold and vapour turbaned steepR
Now that the earth had taken man and allD
Did not the worms that spired about his bonesS
proclaim with that unwearied reedy cryA
That God has laid His fingers on the skyA
That from those fingers glittering summer runsT
Upon the dancer by the dreamless waveU
Why should those lovers that no lovers missV
Dream until God burn Nature with a kissV
The man has found no comfort in the graveU
