ManA
-
IN a cleft that's christened AltB
Under broken stone I haltC
At the bottom of a pitD
That broad noon has never litD
And shout a secret to the stoneE
All that I have said and doneF
Now that I am old and illG
Turns into a question tillG
I lie awake night after nightH
And never get the answers rightH
Did that play of mine send outI
Certain men the English shotJ
Did words of mine put too great strainK
On that woman's reeling brainK
Could my spoken words have checkedL
That whereby a house lay wreckedL
And all seems evil until IM
Sleepless would lie down and dieM

That were to shirkO
The spiritual intellect's great workO
And shirk it in vain There is no releaseP
In a bodkin or diseaseQ
Nor can there be work so greatR
As that which cleans man's dirty slateR
While man can still his body keepS
Wine or love drug him to sleepS
Waking he thanks the Lord that heT
Has body and its stupidityT
But body gone he sleeps no moreU
And till his intellect grows sureV
That all's arranged in one clear viewW
pursues the thoughts that I pursueW
Then stands in judgment on his soulX
And all work done dismisses allY
Out of intellect and sightH
And sinks at last into the nightH
-
EchoN
Into the nightH

O Rocky VoiceZ
Shall we in that great night rejoiceZ
What do we know but that we faceA2
One another in this placeA2
But hush for I have lost the themeB2
Its joy or night seem but a dreamB2
Up there some hawk or owl has struckC2
Dropping out of sky or rockD2
A stricken rabbit is crying outI
And its cry distracts my thoughtE2
