Come round me little childerA
There don't fling stones at meB
Because I mutter as I goC
But pity Moll MageeB
-
My man was a poor fisherA
With shore lines in the sayD
My work was saltin' herringsE
The whole of the long dayD
-
And sometimes from the Saltin' shedF
I scarce could drag my feetG
Under the blessed moonlightH
Along thc pebbly streetG
-
I'd always been but weaklyB
And my baby was just bornI
A neighbour minded her by dayD
I minded her till mornI
-
I lay upon my babyB
Ye little childer dearA
I looked on my cold babyB
When the morn grew frosty and clearA
-
A weary woman sleeps so hardJ
My man grew red and paleK
And gave me money and bade me goC
To my own place KinsaleK
-
He drove me out and shut the doorA
And gave his curse to meB
I went away in silenceL
No neighbour could I seeB
-
The windows and the doors were shutM
One star shone faint and greenN
The little straws were turnin roundO
Across the bare boreenN
-
I went away in silenceL
Beyond old Martin's byreA
I saw a kindly neighbourA
Blowin' her mornin' fireA
-
She drew from me my storyA
My money's all used upP
And still with pityin' scornin' eyeQ
She gives me bite and supP
-
She says my man will surely comeR
And fetch me home aginN
But always as I'm movin' roundO
Without doors or withinN
-
Pilin' the wood or pilin' the turfS
Or goin' to the wellK
I'm thinkin' of my babyA
And keenin' to mysel'K
-
And Sometimes I am sure she knowsT
When openin' wide His doorA
God lights the stats His candlesU
And looks upon the poorA
-
So now ye little childerA
Ye won't fling stones at meA
But gather with your shinin' looksV
And pity Moll MageeA
