The old priest Peter GilliganA
Was weary night and dayB
For half his flock were in their bedsC
Or under green sods layB
-
Once while he nodded on a chairD
At the moth hour of eveE
Another poor man sent for himF
And he began to grieveE
-
'I have no rest nor joy nor peaceG
For people die and die'B
And after cried he 'God forgiveH
My body spake not I '-
-
He knelt and leaning on the chairD
He prayed and fell asleepI
And the moth hour went from the fieldsJ
And stars began to peepI
-
They slowly into millions grewK
And leaves shook in the windB
And God covered the world with shadeB
And whispered to mankindB
-
Upon the time of sparrow chirpL
When the moths came once moreM
The old priest Peter GilliganA
Stood upright on the floorM
-
'Mavrone mavrone the man has diedB
While I slept on the chair'M
He roused his horse out of its sleepI
And rode with little careM
-
He rode now as he never rodeB
By rocky lane and fenN
The sick man's wife opened the doorM
'Father you come again '-
-
'And is the poor man dead ' he criedB
'He died an hour ago '-
The old priest Peter GilliganA
In grief swayed to and froM
-
'When you were gone he turned and diedB
As merry as a bird '-
The old priest Peter GilliganA
He knelt him at that wordB
-
'He Who hath made the night of starsO
For souls who tire and bleedB
Sent one of His great angels downP
To help me in my needB
-
'He Who is wrapped in purple robesQ
With planets in His careM
Had pity on the least of thingsR
Asleep upon a chair '-
