The Touchstone Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBA BCCB DEED BFF GBB BBBB HEEH EIIE

A man there came whence none could tellA
Bearing a Touchstone in his handB
And tested all things in the landB
By its unerring spellA
-
Quick birth of transmutation smoteB
The fair to foul the foul to fairC
Purple nor ermine did he spareC
Nor scorn the dusty coatB
-
Of heirloom jewels prized so muchD
Were many changed to chips and clodsE
And even statues of the GodsE
Crumbled beneath its touchD
-
Then angrily the people criedB
'The loss outweighs the profit farF
Our goods suffice us as they areF
We will not have then tried '-
-
And since they could not so prevailG
To check this unrelenting guestB
They seized him saying 'Let him testB
How real it is our jail '-
-
But though they slew him with the swordB
And in a fire his Touchstone burn'dB
Its doings could not be o'erturnedB
Its undoings restoredB
-
And when to stop all future harmH
They strew'd its ashes on the breezeE
They little guess'd each grain of theseE
Convey'd the perfect charmH
-
North south in rings and amuletsE
Throughout the crowded world 'tis borneI
Which as a fashion long outwornI
In ancient mind forgetsE
