Rhyme Scheme: ABBCDEFFGG EHHIIEJJGG EKKIIELLGG EMMNNEOOGG

When the spinning room was hereA
Came Three Damsels clothed in whiteB
With their spindles every nightB
One and Two and three fair MaidensC
Spinning to a pulsing cadenceD
Singing songs of Elfin MereE
Till the eleventh hour was toll'dF
Then departed through the woldF
Years ago and years agoG
And the tall reeds sigh as the wind doth blowG
-
Three white Lilies calm and clearE
And they were loved by every oneH
Most of all the Pastor's SonH
Listening to their gentle singingI
Felt his heart go from him clingingI
Round these Maids of Elfin MereE
Sued each night to make them stayJ
Sadden'd when they went awayJ
Years ago and years agoG
And the tall reeds sigh as the wind doth blowG
-
Hands that shook with love and fearE
Dared put back the village clockK
Flew the spindle turn'd the rockK
Flow'd the song with subtle roundingI
Till the false 'eleven' was soundingI
Then these Maids of Elfin MereE
Swiftly softly left the roomL
Like three doves on snowy plumeL
Years ago and years agoG
And the tall reeds sigh as the wind doth blowG
-
One that night who wander'd nearE
Heard lamentings by the shoreM
Saw at dawn three stains of goreM
In the waters fade and dwindleN
Never more with song and spindleN
Saw we Maids of Elfin MereE
The Pastor's Son did pine and dieO
Because true love should never lieO
Years ago and years agoG
And the tall reeds sigh as the wind doth blowG
