There is a chillness in the air	A
A coldness in the smile of day	B
And e'en the sunbeam's crimson glare	A
Seems shaded with a tinge of gray	B

Weary of journeys to and fro	C
The sun low creeps adown the sky	D
And on the shivering earth below	C
The long cold shadows grimly lie	D
	-
But there will fall a deeper shade	E
More chilling than the Autumn's breath	F
There is a flower that yet must fade	E
And yield its sweetness up to death	F
	-
She sits upon the window seat	G
Musing in mournful silence there	A
While on her brow the sunbeams meet	G
And dally with her golden hair	A
	-
She gazes on the sea of light	H
That overflows the western skies	I
Till her great soul seems plumed for flight	H
From out the window of her eyes	I
	-
Hopes unfulfilled have vexed her breast	J
Sad smiles have checked the rising sigh	D
Until her weary heart confessed	J
Reluctantly that she must die	D

And she has thought of all the ties	I
The golden ties that bind her here	K
Of all that she has learned to prize	I
Of all that she has counted dear	L
	-
The joys of body heart and mind	M
The pleasures that she loves so well	N
The grasp of friendship warm and kind	M
And love's delicious hallowed spell	N
	-
And she has wept that she must lie	D
Beneath the snow wreaths drifted deep	O
With no fond mother standing nigh	D
To watch her in her silent sleep	O

And she has prayed if it might be	P
Within the reach of human skill	Q
And not averse to Heaven that she	P
Might live a little longer still	Q
	-
But earthly hope is gone and now	R
Comes in its place a brighter beam	S
Leaving upon her snowy brow	R
The impress of a heavenly dream	S
	-
That she when her frail body yields	T
And fades away to mortal eyes	I
Shall burst through Heaven's eternal fields	T
And bloom again in Paradise	U
