Hans Huckebein (the Unlucky Raven) Prologue Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB ABAB ACAC ADAD DDDD ABAB

Sosehr sein Ende mich bewegtA
Ich durft' es anders nicht vermeldenB
Er stirbt denn tragisch angelegtA
War der Charakter dieses HeldenB
-
His ending moves me only mindA
A diff'rent one I can't envisionB
He dies for tragically designedA
Was our hero's dispositionB
-
-
Gar manches ist vorherbestimmtA
Das Schicksal f hrt ihn in Bedr ngnisC
Doch wie er sich dabei benimmtA
Ist seine Schuld und nicht Verh ngnisC
-
There is a predetermined fateA
And fortune seems to be essentialD
But how to act how to relateA
that is his fault not providentialD
-
-
Drum bleibt's dabei Denn die MoralD
Ist hier kein leeres WortgeklingelD
Und lebte er auch noch einmalD
Er bliebe doch der alte SchlingelD
-
The moral thus remains unchangedA
And is no empty declarationB
For if once more this world he rangedA
He'd be the same old aggravationB
