And since he rowed his father homeA
His hand has never touched an oarB
All day he wanders on the shoreB
And hearkens to the swishing foamA
Though blind from birth he still could rowC
As well as any lad with sightD
And knew strange things that none may knowC
Save those who live without the lightD
-
When they put out that Summer eveE
To sink the lobster pots at seaF
The sun was crimson in the skyG
And not a breath was in the skyG
The brooding thunder laden skyG
That heavily and wearilyF
Weighed down upon the waveless seaF
That scarcely seamed to heaveE
-
The pots were safely sunk and thenH
The father gave the word for homeA
He took the tiller in his handI
And in hi s heart already homeA
He brought her nose round towards the landI
To steer her straight for homeA
-
He never spokeJ
Nor stirred againH
A sudden strokeJ
And he lay deadK
With staring eyes and lips off leadK
-
The son rowed on and nothing fearedL
And sometimes merrilyF
He lifted up his voice and sangM
Both high and lowC
And loud and sweetN
For he was ever gay at seaF
And ever glad to rowC
And rowed as only blind men rowC
And little did the blind lad knowC
That death was at his feetN
For still he thought his father steeredL
Nor knew that he was all aloneO
With death upon the open seaF
So merrily he rowed and sangM
And strangely on the silence rangM
That lonely melodyF
As through the livid brooding gloamA
By rock and reef he rowed for homeA
The blind man rowed the dead man homeA
-
But as they neared the shoreB
He rested on his oarB
And wondering that his father keptP
So very quiet in the sternQ
He laughed and asked him if he sleptP
And vowed he heard him snore just nowR
Though when his father spoke no wordS
A sudden fear upon him cameT
And crying on his father's nameT
With flinching heart he heardS
The water lapping on the shoreB
And all his blood ran cold to feelU
The shingle grate beneath the keelU
And stretching over towards the sternQ
His knuckle touched the dead man's browR
-
But help was near at handI
And safe he came to landI
Though none has ever knownO
How he rowed in aloneO
And never touched a reefV
Some say they saw the dead man steerW
The dead man steer the blind man homeA
Though when they found him deadK
His hand was cold as leadK
-
So ever restless to and froC
In every sort of weatherX
The blind lad wanders on the shoreB
And hearkens to the foamA
His hand has never touched an oarB
Since they came home togetherX
The blind who rowed his father homeA
The dear who steered his blind son homeA
