Rhyme Scheme: ABC DEFGH IJDKLMNOL PQRSTU VWQPXQYZCLA2KEB2 C2D2

Somewhere in Chelsea early summerA
And walking in the twilight toward the docksB
I thought I made out Robinson ahead of meC
-
-
From an uncurtained second story room a radioD
Was playing There s a Small Hotel a kiteE
Twisted above dark rooftops and slow drifting birdsF
We were alone there he and IG
Inhabiting the empty streetH
-
-
Under a sign for Natural Bloom CigarsI
While lights clicked softly in the dusk from red to greenJ
He stopped and gazed into a windowD
Where a plaster Venus modeling a trussK
Looked out at Eastbound traffic But RobinsonL
I knew was out of town he summers at a place in MaineM
Sometimes on Fire Island sometimes the CapeN
Leaves town in June and comes back after Labor DayO
And yet I almost called out RobinsonL
-
-
There was no chance Just as I passedP
Turning my head to search his faceQ
His own head turned with mineR
And fixed me with dilated terrifying eyesS
That stopped my blood His voiceT
Came at me like an echo in the darkU
-
-
I thought I saw the whirlpool openingV
Kicked all night at a bolted doorW
You must have followed me from Astor PlaceQ
An empty paper floats down at the lastP
And then a day as huge as yesterday in pairsX
Unrolled its horror on my faceQ
Until it blocked Running in sweatY
To reach the docks I turned backZ
For a second glance I had no certaintyC
There in the dark that it was RobinsonL
Or someone elseA2
The block was bare The VenusK
Bathed in blue fluorescent lightE
Stared toward the river As I hurried WestB2
-
-
The lights across the bay were coming onC2
The boats moved silently and the low whistles blewD2
