Here where precipitate Spring with one light boundA
Into hot Summer's lusty arms expiresB
And where go forth at morn at eve at nightC
Soft airs that want the lute to play with themD
And softer sighs that know not what they wantE
Under a wall beneath an orange treeF
Whose tallest flowers could tell the lowlier onesG
Of sights in Fiesole right up aboveH
While I was gazing a few paces offI
At what they seemed to show me with their nodsJ
Their frequent whispers and their pointing shootsK
A gentle maid came down the garden stepsL
And gathered the pure treasure in her lapM
I heard the branches rustle and stept forthN
To drive the ox away or mule or goatO
Such I believed it must be for sweet scentsP
Are the swift vehicles of still sweeter thoughtsQ
And nurse and pillow the dull memoryF
That would let drop without them her best storesR
They bring me tales of youth and tones of loveH
And 'tis and ever was my wish and wayS
To let all flowers live freely and all dieT
Whene'er their Genius bids their souls departU
Among their kindred in their native placeV
I never pluck the rose the violet's headW
Hath shaken with my breath upon its bankX
And not reproacht me the ever sacred cupY
Of the pure lily hath between my handsZ
Felt safe unsoil'd nor lost one grain of goldA2
I saw the light that made the glossy leavesB2
More glossy the fair arm the fairer cheekC2
Warmed by the eye intent on its pursuitD2
I saw the foot that altho half erectE2
From its grey slipper could not lift her upY
To what she wanted I held down a branchF2
And gather'd her some blossoms since their hourG2
Was come and bees had wounded them and fliesH2
Of harder wing were working their way throG2
And scattering them in fragments under footI2
So crisp were some they rattled unevolvedI2
Others ere broken off fell into shellsJ2
For such appear the petals when detachtI2
Unbending brittle lucid white like snowK2
And like snow not seen thro by eye or sunL2
Yet every one her gown received from meF
Was fairer than the first I thought not soK2
But so she praised them to reward my careG2
I said you find the largestI2
-
This indeedI2
Cried she is large and sweetI2
-
She held one forthN
Whether for me to look at or to takeM2
She knew not nor did I but taking itI2
Would best have solved and this she felt her doubtsN2
I dared not touch it for it seemed a partI2
Of her own self fresh full the most matureG2
Of blossoms yet a blossom with a touchO2
To fall and yet unfallenL2
-
She drew backP2
The boon she tendered and then finding notI2
The ribbon at her waist to fix it inL2
Dropt it as loth to drop it on the restI2
