Here where precipitate Spring with one light boundB
Into hot Summer's lusty arms expiresC
And where go forth at morn at eve at nightD
Soft airs that want the lute to play with themE
And softer sighs that know not what they wantF
Under a wall beneath an orange treeG
Whose tallest flowers could tell the lowlier onesH
Of sights in Fiesole right up aboveI
While I was gazing a few paces offJ
At what they seemed to show me with their nodsK
Their frequent whispers and their pointing shootsL
A gentle maid came down the garden stepsM
And gathered the pure treasure in her lapN
I heard the branches rustle and stept forthO
To drive the ox away or mule or goatP
Such I believed it must be for sweet scentsQ
Are the swift vehicles of still sweeter thoughtsR
And nurse and pillow the dull memoryG
That would let drop without them her best storesS
They bring me tales of youth and tones of loveI
And 'tis and ever was my wish and wayT
To let all flowers live freely and all dieU
Whene'er their Genius bids their souls departV
Among their kindred in their native placeW
I never pluck the rose the violet's headX
Hath shaken with my breath upon its bankY
And not reproacht me the ever sacred cupZ
Of the pure lily hath between my handsA2
Felt safe unsoil'd nor lost one grain of goldB2
I saw the light that made the glossy leavesC2
More glossy the fair arm the fairer cheekD2
Warmed by the eye intent on its pursuitE2
I saw the foot that altho half erectF2
From its grey slipper could not lift her upZ
To what she wanted I held down a branchG2
And gather'd her some blossoms since their hourH2
Was come and bees had wounded them and fliesI2
Of harder wing were working their way throH2
And scattering them in fragments under footJ2
So crisp were some they rattled unevolvedJ2
Others ere broken off fell into shellsK2
For such appear the petals when detachtJ2
Unbending brittle lucid white like snowL2
And like snow not seen thro by eye or sunM2
Yet every one her gown received from meG
Was fairer than the first I thought not soL2
But so she praised them to reward my careH2
I said you find the largestJ2
-
This indeedJ2
Cried she is large and sweetJ2
-
She held one forthO
Whether for me to look at or to takeN2
She knew not nor did I but taking itJ2
Would best have solved and this she felt her doubtsO2
I dared not touch it for it seemed a partJ2
Of her own self fresh full the most matureH2
Of blossoms yet a blossom with a touchP2
To fall and yet unfallenM2
-
She drew backQ2
The boon she tendered and then finding notJ2
The ribbon at her waist to fix it inM2
Dropt it as loth to drop it on the restJ2
