Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDEEFGHHIIJD KKAA LLMN O POP Q R AQ S A

An ancient chestnut's blossoms threwA
Their heavy odour over twoA
Leucippe it is said was oneB
The other then was AlciphronB
'Come come why should we stand beneathC
This hollow tree's unwholesome breath 'D
Said Alciphron 'here 's not a bladeE
Of grass or moss and scanty shadeE
Come it is just the hour to roveF
In the lone dingle shepherds loveG
There straight and tall the hazel twigH
Divides the crook egrave d rock held figH
O'er the blue pebbles where the rillI
In winter runs and may run stillI
Come then while fresh and calm the airJ
And while the shepherds are not there 'D
-
Leucippe But I would rather go when theyK
Sit round about and sing and playK
Then why so hurry me for youA
Like play and song and shepherds tooA
-
Alciphron I like the shepherds very wellL
And song and play as you can tellL
But there is play I sadly fearM
And song I would not have you hearN
-
Leucippe What can it be What can it beO
-
Alciphron To you may none of them repeatP
The play that you have play'd with meO
The song that made your bosom beatP
-
Leucippe Don't keep your arm about my waistQ
-
Alciphron Might you not stumbleR
-
Leucippe Well then doA
But why are we in all this hasteQ
-
Alciphron To singS
-
Leucippe Alas and not play tooA
