Weary went the old WitchA
Weary of her packB
She sat her down by the churchyard wallC
And jerked it off her backB
-
The cord brake yes the cord brakeD
Just where the dead did lieE
And Charms and Spells and SorceriesF
Spilled out beneath the skyE
-
Weary was the old WitchA
She rested her old eyesF
From the lantern fruited yew treesF
And the scarlet of the skiesF
-
And out the dead came stumblingG
From every rift and crackB
Silent as moss and plunderedH
The gaping packB
-
They wish them three times overI
Away they skip full soonJ
Bat and Mole and LeveretH
Under the rising moonJ
-
Owl and Newt and NightjarI
They take their shapes and creepK
Silent as churchyard lichenL
While she squats asleepK
-
All of these dead were stirringG
Each unto each did callC
'A Witch a Witch is sleepingG
Under the churchyard wallC
-
'A Witch a Witch is sleeping '-
The shrillness ebbed awayM
And up the way worn moon clomb brightH
Hard on the track of dayM
-
She shone high wan and silveryI
Day's colours paled and diedH
And save the mute and creeping wormN
Nought else was there besideH
-
Names may be writ and mounds riseF
Purporting Here be bonesF
But empty is that churchyardH
Of all save stonesF
-
Owl and Newt and NightjarI
Leveret Bat and MoleO
Haunt and call in the twilightH
Where she slept poor soulO
