The Remonstrance Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDD EFGGHH IJHHHH KKLLDDMM

I was at peace until you cameA
And set a careless mind aflameA
I lived in quiet cold contentB
All longing in safe banishmentC
Until your ghostly lips and eyesD
Made wisdom unwiseD
-
Naught was in me to tempt your feetE
To seek a lodging Quite forgotF
Lay the sweet solitude we twoG
In childhood used to wander throughG
Time's cold had closed my heart aboutH
And shut you outH
-
Well and what then O vision graveI
Take all the little all I haveJ
Strip me of what in voiceless throughtH
Life's kept of life unhoped unsoughtH
Reverie and dream that memory mustH
Hide deep in dustH
-
This only I say Though cold and bareK
The haunted house you have chosen to shareK
Still 'neath its walls the moonbeam goesL
And trembles on the untended roseL
Still o'er its broken roof tree riseD
The starry arches of the skiesD
And 'neath your lightest word shall beM
The thunder of an ebbing seaM
