'Upstairs in the large closet childA
This side the blue room doorB
Is an old Bible bound in leatherC
Standing upon the floorB
-
'Go with this taper bring it meD
Carry it on your armE
It is the book on many a seaD
Hath stilled the waves' alarm '-
-
Late the hour dark the nightF
The house is solitaryD
Feeble is a taper's lightF
To light poor Ann to seeD
-
Her eyes are yet with visions brightF
Of sylph and river flower and fayG
Now through a narrow corridorC
She takes her lonely wayG
-
Vast shadows on the heedless wallsH
Gigantic loom stoop lowI
Each little hasty footfall callsH
Hollowly to and froI
-
In the dim solitude her heartJ
Remembers tearlesslyI
White winters when her mother wasK
Her loving companyD
-
Now in the dark clear glass she seesL
A taper mocking hersM
A phantom face of light blue eyesN
Reflecting phantom fearsO
-
Around her loom the vacant roomsP
Wind the upward stairsQ
She climbs on into a lonelinessR
Only her taper sharesQ
-
Her grandmother is deaf with ageS
A garden of moonless treesL
Would answer not though she should cryT
In anguish on her kneesL
-
So that she scarcely heeds so fastU
Her pent up heart doth beatV
When faint along the corridorC
Falleth the sound of feetV
-
Sounds lighter than silk slippers makeW
Upon a ballroom floor when sweetV
Violin and 'cello wakeW
Music for twirling feetV
-
O in an old unfriendly houseX
What shapes may not concealI
Their faces in the open dayG
At night abroad to stealI
-
Even her taper seems with fearY
To languish small and blueI
Far in the woods the winter windZ
Runs whistling throughI
-
A dreadful cold plucks at each hairA2
Her mouth is stretched to cryT
But sudden with a gush of joyB2
It narrows to a sighT
-
It is a wilding child which comesC2
Swift through the corridorC
Singing an old forgotten songD2
This ancient burden boreB
-
'Thorn thorn I wisE2
And roses twainF2
A red rose and a whiteF
Stoop in the blossom bee and kissE2
A lonely child good nightF
-
'Swim fish sing birdG2
And sigh againH2
I that am lost am loneI2
Bee in the blossom never stirredG2
Locks hid beneath a stone '-
-
Her eye was of the azure fireC
That hovers in wintry flameJ2
Her raiment wild and yellow as furzeE2
That spouteth out the sameJ2
-
And in her hand she bore no flowerC
But on her head a wreathK2
Of faded flag flowers that did yetL2
Smell sweetly after deathM2
-
Clear was the light of lovelinessE2
That lit her face like rainF2
And sad the mouth that utteredG2
Her immemorial strainF2
-
-
-
Gloomy with night the corridorC
Is now that she is goneN2
Albeit this solitary childA
No longer seems aloneI2
-
Fast though her taper dwindles downO2
Heavy and thick the tomeP2
A beauty beyond fear to dimQ2
Haunts now her alien homeP2
-
Ghosts in the world malignant grimQ2
Vex many a wood and glenH2
And house and pool the unquiet ghostsE2
Of dead and restless menH2
-
But in her grannie's house this spiritR2
A child as lone as sheD
Pining for love not found on earthS2
Ann dreams again to seeD
-
Seated upon her tapestry stoolI
Her fairy book laid byT
She gazes in the fire knowingT2
She hath sweet companyD
