The Old Soldier Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBC DDEEC FFCCC GDCCC

There came an Old Soldier to my doorA
Asked a crust and asked no moreA
The wars had thinned him very bareB
Fighting and marching everywhereB
With a Fol rol dol rol di doC
-
With nose stuck out and cheek sunk inD
A bristling beard upon his chinD
Powder and bullets and wounds and drumsE
Had come to that Soldier as suchlike comesE
With a Fol rol dol rol di doC
-
'Twas sweet and fresh with buds of MayF
Flowers springing from every sprayF
And when he had supped the Old Soldier trolledC
The song of youth that never grows oldC
Called Fol rol dol rol di doC
-
Most of him rags and all of him leanG
And the belt round his belly drawn tightsome inD
He lifted his peaked old grizzled headC
And these were the very same words he saidC
A Fol rol dol rol di doC
