| And ever so many people go | A |
| Past the small lodge forlorn and still | B |
| Under the heavy branches till | B |
| Comes the blank wall and there's the door | C |
| Go in they do come out no more | C |
| No voice says aught no spark of light | D |
| Across that threshold cheers the sight | D |
| Only the evening star on high | E |
| Less lonely makes a lonely sky | E |
| As one by one the people go | A |
| Into that very old house I know | A |
