The Lamplighter Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEF GHIJKL MNOPMQ RMSDKF

When the light of day declinethA
And a swift angel through the skyB
Kindleth God's tapers clearC
With ashen staff the lamplighterD
Passeth along the darkling streetsE
To light our earthly lampsF
-
Lest prowling in the darknessG
The thief should haunt with quiet treadH
Or men on evil errands setI
Or wayfarers be benightedJ
Or neighbours bent from house to houseK
Should need a guiding torchL
-
He is like a needlewomanM
Who deftly on a sable hemN
Stitches in gleaming jewelsO
Or haply he is like a heroP
Whose bright deeds on the long journeyM
Are beacons on our wayQ
-
And when in the East cometh morningR
And the broad splendour of the sunM
Then with the tune of little birdsS
Ringing on high the lamplighterD
Passeth by each quiet houseK
And putteth out the lampsF
