Rhyme Scheme: A BCBCDEFGFG HIHI JKJKLMLMNOPPQRSTTSUV WVXGMGM

To Edward ThomasA
-
The haze of noon wanned silver greyB
The soundless mansion of the sunC
The air made visible in his rayB
Like molten glass from furnace runC
Quivered o'er heat baked turf and stoneD
And the flower of the gorse burned onE
Burned softly as gold of a child's fair hairF
Along each spiky spray and shedG
Almond like incense in the airF
Whereon our senses fedG
-
At foot a few sparse harebells blueH
And still as were the friend's dark eyesI
That dwelt on mine transfix d throughH
With sudden ecstatic surmiseI
-
'Hst ' he cried softly smiling and loJ
Stealing amidst that maze gold greenK
I heard a whispering music flowJ
From guileful throat of bird unseenK
So delicate the straining earL
Scarce carried its faint syllablingM
Into a heart caught up to hearL
That inmost ponderingM
Of bird like self with self We stoodN
In happy trance like solitudeO
Hearkening a lullay grieved and sweetP
As when on isle uncharted beatP
'Gainst coral at the palm tree's rootQ
With brine clear snow white foam afloatR
The wailing not of water or windS
A husht far wild divine lamentT
When Prospero his wizardry bentT
Winged Ariel to bindS
Then silence and o'er flooding noonU
I raised my head smiled too And heV
Moved his great hand the magic goneW
Gently amused to seeV
My ignorant wonderment He sighedX
'It was a nightingale ' he saidG
'That sotto voce cons the songM
He'll sing when dark is spreadG
And Night's vague hours are sweet and longM
And we are laid abed '-
