Nicholas Nye Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEAE BFGFFEF FHBHIEJE FBKBLEME NOFOFEFE

Thistle and darnell and dock grew thereA
And a bush in the corner of mayB
On the orchard wall I used to sprawlC
In the blazing heat of the dayB
-
Half asleep and half awakeD
While the birds went twittering byE
And nobody there my lone to shareA
But Nicholas NyeE
-
Nicholas Nye was lean and grayB
Lame of leg and oldF
More than a score of donkey's yearsG
He had been since he was foaledF
He munched the thistles purple and spikedF
Would sometimes stoop and sighE
And turn his head as if he'd saidF
'Poor Nicholas Nye '-
-
Alone with his shadow he'd drowse in the meadowF
Lazily swinging his tailH
At break of day he used to brayB
Not much too hearty and haleH
But a wonderful gumption was under his skinI
And a clean calm light in his eyeE
And once in a while he'd smileJ
Would Nicholas NyeE
-
Seem to be smiling at me he wouldF
From his bush in the corner of mayB
Bony and ownerless widowed and wornK
Knobble kneed lonely and grayB
And over the grass would seem to passL
'Neath the deep dark blue of the skyE
Something much better than words between meM
And Nicholas NyeE
-
But dusk would come in the apple boughsN
The green of the glow worm shineO
The birds in nest would crouch to restF
And home I'd trudge to mineO
And there in the moonlight dark with dewF
Asking not wherefore nor whyE
Would brood like a ghost and as still as a postF
Old Nicholas NyeE
