Like an old battle youth is wildA
With bugle and spear and counter cryB
Fanfare and drummery yet a childA
Dreaming of that sweet chivalryC
The piercing terror cannot seeC
-
He with a mild and serious eyeB
Along the azure of the yearsD
Sees the sweet pomp sweep hurtling byB
But he sees not death's blood and tearsE
Sees not the plunging of the spearsD
-
And all the strident horror ofF
Horse and rider in red defeatG
Is only music fine enoughH
To lull him into slumber sweetG
In fields where ewe and lambkin bleatG
-
O if with such simplicityG
Himself take arms and suffer warI
With beams his targe shall gilded beG
Though in the thickening gloom be farJ
The steadfast light of any starJ
-
Though hoarse War's eagle on him perchK
Quickened with guilty lightnings thereL
It shall in vain for terror searchK
Where a child's eyes beneath bloody hairL
Gaze purely through the dingy airL
-
And when the wheeling rout is spentG
Though in the heaps of slain he lieB
Or lonely in his last contentG
Quenchless shall burn in secrecyG
The flame Death knows his victors byB
