To lull him into slumber sweet | G |
In fields where ewe and lambkin bleat | G |

O if with such simplicity | G |
Himself take arms and suffer war | I |
With beams his targe shall gilded be | G |
Though in the thickening gloom be far | J |
The steadfast light of any star | J |

Though hoarse War's eagle on him perch | K |
Quickened with guilty lightnings there | L |
It shall in vain for terror search | K |
Where a child's eyes beneath bloody hair | L |
Gaze purely through the dingy air | L |
