Gloria Mundi Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDFGG HIJIKK HLJLMN OHOJPP QCQCRR STKTUU VWVWUU

Upon a bank easeless with knobs of goldA
Beneath a canopy of noonday smokeB
I saw a measureless Beast morose and boldA
With eyes like one from filthy dreams awokeB
Who stares upon the daylight in despairC
For very terror of the nothing thereC
-
-
This beast in one flat hand clutched vulture wiseD
A glittering image of itself in jetE
And with the other groped about its eyesD
To drive away the dreams that pestered itF
And never ceased its coils to toss and beatG
The mire encumbering its feeble feetG
-
-
Sharp was its hunger though continuallyH
It seemed a cud of stones to ruminateI
And often like a dog let glittering lieJ
This meatless fare its foolish gaze to sateI
Once more convulsively to stoop its jawK
Or seize the morsel with an envious pawK
-
-
Indeed it seemed a hidden enemyH
Must lurk within the clouds above that bankL
It strained so wildly its pale stubborn eyeJ
To pierce its own foul vapours dim and dankL
Till wearied out it raved in wrath and foamM
Daring that Nought Invisible to comeN
-
-
Ay and it seemed some strange delight to findO
In this unmeaning din till suddenlyH
As if it heard a rumour on the windO
Or far away its freer children cryJ
Lifting its face made quiet there it stayedP
Till died the echo its own rage had madeP
-
-
That place alone was barren where it layQ
Flowers bloomed beyond utterly sweet and fairC
And even its own dull heart might think to stayQ
In livelong thirst of a clear river thereC
Flowing from unseen hills to unheard seasR
Through a still vale of yew and almond treesR
-
-
And then I spied in the lush green belowS
Its tortured belly One like silver paleT
With fingers closed upon a rope of strawK
That bound the Beast squat neck to hoary tailT
Lonely in all that verdure faint and deepU
He watched the monster as a shepherd sheepU
-
-
I marvelled at the power strength and rageV
Of this poor creature in such slavery boundW
Fettered with worms of fear forlorn with ageV
Its blue wing stumps stretched helpless on the groundW
While twilight faded into darkness deepU
And he who watched it piped its pangs asleepU
