To Her Royal Highness, The Princess Of *** Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFF GGBB HHII AAJJ KKLL MMLL NNOO PPEE QQRS

Abeauteous princess often mayA
Languish in pleasure's season gayA
The empty forms of haughty stateB
Oft make life tedious to the greatB
-
It must the greatest king confoundC
With all his courtiers circled roundC
Amidst a splendid court to findD
That grandeur can't give peace of mindD
-
Some think that play can give delightE
But soon it grows insipid quiteE
And monarchs have been often seenF
While gaming tortured with the spleenF
-
A king oft feasts with heavy heartG
Pleasures to him no joy impartG
While the dull vulgar contemplateB
Like gazing idiots pomp and stateB
-
And fondly think who is possessedH
Of them with bliss supreme is blessedH
Soon as the sun's refulgent raysI
Spread o'er the hemisphere their blazeI
-
The king begins another dayA
Yet knows not where to take his wayA
Tired of himself he straight repairsJ
To company to soothe his caresJ
-
But pleasure flies from his embraceK
It rises not from change of placeK
This day's insipid as the lastL
At night he knows not how it passedL
-
Time's loss is not to be repairedM
Life's to an instant well comparedM
What when life posts away so fastL
Can days appear so long at lastL
-
Princess whose worth above thy ageN
All hearts at two courts can engageN
You usefully that time employO
By youth consumed in rapid joyO
-
The genius given by heaven benignP
You strive to polish and refineP
By studies which at once uniteE
Instructions solid with delightE
-
'Tis best the mind should be employedQ
Indolence leaves a craving voidQ
The soul is like a subtle fireR
Which if not fed must soon expireS
