Lay me in yon place ladA
The gloamin's thick wi' nichtA
I canna' see yer face ladA
For my een's no richtA
But it's owre late for leein'B
An' I ken fine I'm deein'B
Like an auld craw fleein'B
To the last o' the lichtA
-
The kye gang to the byre ladA
An' the sheep to the fauldA
Ye'll mak' a spunk o' fire ladA
For my he'rt's turned cauldA
An' whaur the trees are meetin'B
There's a sound like waters beatin'B
An' the bird seems near to greetin'B
That was aye singin' bauldA
-
There's jist the tent to leave ladA
I've gaithered little gearC
There's jist yersel' to grieve ladA
An' the auld dug hereD
An' when the morn comes creepin'B
An' the waukw'nin' birds are cheipin'B
It'll find me lyin' sleepin'B
As I've slept saxty yearC
-
Ye'll rise to meet the sun ladA
An' baith be traiv'lin westA
But me that's auld an' done ladA
I'll bide an' tak' my restA
For the grey heid is bendin'B
An' the auld shune's needin' mendin'B
But the traiv'lin's near its endin'B
And the end's aye the bestA
