In Youth when through our veins runs fastA
The bright red stream of lifeB
The Soul s Voice is a trumpet blastA
That calls us to the strifeB
The Spirit spurns its prison barsC
And feels with force enduedD
To scale the ramparts of the starsC
And storm InfinitudeD
-
Youth passes like a dungeon growsE
The Spirit s house of clayF
The voice that once in music roseE
In murmurs dies awayF
-
But in the day when sickness soreG
Smites on the body s wallsH
The Soul s Voice through the breach once moreG
Like to a trumpet callsH
-
Well shall it be with him who heedsI
The mystic summons thenJ
His after life with loving deedsI
Shall blossom amongst menJ
-
He shall have gifts the gift that feelsK
The germ within the clodD
And hears the whirring of the wheelsK
That turn the mills of GodD
-
The gift that sees with glance profoundD
The secret soul of thingsL
And in the silence hears the soundD
Of vast and viewless wingsL
-
The veil of Isis sevenfoldD
To him as gauze shall beM
Wherethrough clear eyed he shall beholdD
The Ancient MysteryM
-
He shall do battle for the TrueN
Defend till death the RightD
With Shoes of Swiftness Wrong pursueN
With Sword of Sharpness smiteD
-
And dying he shall haply hearO
Like golden trumpets blownP
For joy far voices sweet and clearQ
Soul voices like his ownP
-
So welcomed may he join the ThrongR
Upon the Shining ShoreG
As one who after wandering longR
Returneth home once moreG
