Once upon a hushed red morningA
In the wondrous years of oldB
When the sun rose like a RajahC
Clad in robes of gleaming goldB
-
And upon his land of IndiaD
Poured the largess of his heartE
By the Ganges stood a BrahminF
Far from all his kind apartE
-
Darkly on that royal dawningA
Gazed the Brahmin sore distraughtG
And his body lean was shakenH
With the passion of his thoughtG
-
Many years with hands upliftedI
Till they withered in the airJ
I have prayed he cried to BrahmaK
But He heedeth not my prayerJ
-
I have prayed and I have fastedI
Waiting ever for a signL
While the world went reeling past meK
With its women and its wineL
-
Burning suns by day have scorched meK
Freezing stars with icy spearsM
They have pierced my brain at midnightN
Through the long and lonely yearsM
-
I would lose my soul in BrahmaK
Who is soul and life and breathO
Nought to me are human shadowsP
Flitting by to empty deathO
-
I have done with prayer and fastingA
Lest the years in vain go byQ
I will search the world for BrahmaK
I will seek him till I dieQ
-
Thus the Brahmin spake then swiftlyK
Journeyed up the Ganges streamK
All around him reeled the riotR
Of a strange phantasmal dreamK
-
Rajahs proud he saw returningA
Prom the wars in regal guiseS
In their turbans blood red rubiesT
Gleaming over gleaming eyesS
-
Royal elephants that slowlyK
Marched with trunks in pride upcurledR
And the spearmen and the bannersU
And the glory of the worldR
-
And amidst the great processionsV
Captive kings in fetters borneW
While the cymbals clashed with triumphX
And the trumpets blared with scornW
-
These he passed with eyes unheedingA
All their glorious arrayY
For he knew they were but shadowsP
That grim death would sweep awayY
-
Never sight of human sorrowZ
Never show of human prideR
Edge of sword or smile of womanH
Turned him from his path asideR
-
Yet he stayed by still dim watersU
On whose breast the lotus bloomsA2
Flower of secrecy and silenceB2
Gleaming midst the temple gloomsB2
-
All in vain he searched the templesB2
Where in many a form and guiseB2
In the dim vast halls the idolsB2
Stared with soulless jewelled eyesB2
-
I will seek he cried for BrahmaK
Midst the everlasting snowsB2
Where the holy Ganges RiverC2
From his awful forehead flowsB2
-
To the far off peaks he turned himK
Leaving homes of men behindR
Driven onward by his yearningA
As a flame before the windR
-
Hunger gnawed and fear pursued himK
As he climbed with sobbing breathO
And above his head unsleepingA
Hovered dark the vulture DeathO
-
Ever downward plunged the torrentsB2
In a fierce and foaming floodR
Roaring through the gloomy gorgesB2
Like a people mad for bloodR
-
Rose the white moon like a spectreC2
All with ghostly light aglowZ
Shining on a lonely ShadowZ
Midst the Himalayan snowZ
-
Rose the sun in opal gloryK
Still the Shadow lingered thereJ
On a ledge above the eaglesB2
In the vast blue void of airJ
-
Long the Brahmin stood and gazed onD2
India lying far belowZ
Like a Maharanee dreamingA
Evil dreams of war and woeZ
-
And he felt his bosom thrillingA
With a fearful pity thenE2
For the fierce unhappy nationsB2
For the wretched sons of menE2
-
All this woe of old passed by meK
As a cry upon the windR
Brahma is no God of MercyK
Unto hapless humankindR
-
Or perchance the Fate that rules usB2
Rules Him too through endless yearsB2
And the Ganges Sowing seawardR
Is the flowing of his tearsB2
-
So he spake then upward strugglingA
Came at last unto a plainF2
Cold and silent white and awfulG2
Far above the hurricaneF2
-
And amidst it gleamed the fountainH
Whence the Holy River flowsB2
And beside the mystic fountainH
Bloomed a red and lonely RoseB2
-
Never wind its leaves did ruffleG2
Never breeze dispersed its balmK
As it bloomed there a still glowingA
Blossom of Eternal CalmK
-
All the plain was white and silentR
Blue and silent was the skyA
And the Brahmin in his anguishH2
By the Rose lay down to dieA
-
Now the end has come he murmuredR
Lone I die amidst the snowsB2
I have sought in vain for BrahmaK
I am Brahma breathed the RoseB2
