The wan light of a stormy dawnA
Gleamed on a tossing shipB
It was the In MemoriamC
Upon a mourning tripB
Wild waves were on the windward bowD
And breakers on the leeE
And through her sides the women heardF
The seething of the seaE
-
O Captain cried a widow fairG
Her plump white hands clasped sheE
Thinkst thou if drowned in this dread stormC
That sav d we shall beE
-
You speak in riddles lady dearH
How sav d can we beE
If we are drowned Alas I meanI
In Paradise said sheE
-
O I ve sailed North and I ve sailed SouthJ
He was a godless wightK
But boy or man since my days beganL
That shore I ne er did sightK
-
The Captain told the First Mate boldM
What that fair lady saidN
The First Mate sneered in his black beardO
His eyes burned in his headN
-
Full forty souls are here aboardP
A sailing on the waveQ
Without the crew and twixt us twoR
I think they ve none to saveQ
-
Full forty souls and each one isS
A mourner as you knowT
They weep the scuppers full the shipB
Is waterlogged with woeT
-
Again he sneered in his black beardO
The cruise is not so briefU
But ere we land on earthly strandV
All will have found reliefU
-
Nay nay the Captain said First MateW
You have forgotten oneX
With eyes of blue the tears are trueR
From those dear eyes that runX
-
She mourns her sweetheart drowned last yearH
A seaman he forsoothJ
I would not drown for Christ his crownY
If she were mine Fair RuthJ
-
Brave words but words the First Mate criedZ
Are wind Behold in meE
The warmest lover and the lastA2
Mine shall the maiden beE
-
-
Fair Ruth stood by the taffrail highB2
A cross dropped in the seaE
If you lie here my sweetheart dearH
By this remember meE
Fair Ruth stood by the taffrail highB2
A ring dropped in the seaE
Marry him not ye false mermaidsC2
Married he s now to meE
-
The heavens flashed flame a black cloud cameC
Its wings the sky did spanL
And hovered above the fated shipB
Like death o er a dying manL
-
Bended the spars and shrieked the shroudsD2
The sails flew from the mastA2
And like a soul by fiends pursuedE2
The ship fled through the blastA2
-
More sail more sail the First Mate criedZ
The Captain stood aghastA2
More sail more sail and he laughed in scornF2
All by the mizen mastA2
-
O brethren dear there s nought to fearH
The steward told me soT
Twas the parson meek who thus did speakG2
Just come up from belowT
-
And were there he said with upraised headN
And hands clasped piouslyE
I have a sainted spouse in HeavenX
I trow she waits for meE
-
Then grimly laughed the false First MateW
Good parson let her beE
I ve a wife in every port but thatH2
And that we shall not seeE
-
Oh pardon seek cried the parson meekG2
And pray if pray you canL
For much I fear by your scornful sneerH
That you are a sinful manL
-
Then louder laughed the false First MateW
Louder and louder stillI2
And the wicked crew laughed loudly tooR
As wicked seamen willI2
-
O Captain whispered a gentle dameC
When shall we see the landV
The Captain answered never a wordF
But clasped her by the handV
-
-
Day after day night after nightK
On on the ship did reelJ2
The Captain drank with the second mateW
The First Mate held the wheelJ2
Down came a black cloud on the shipB
And wrapped her like a pallK2
And horror of awful darkness fellL2
Upon them one and allM2
-
The night had swallowed them utterlyE
None could his fellow seeE
But ghostly voices up and downY
Went whispering fearsomelyE
-
No faint ray shone from moon or sunX
The light of Heaven was goneA
But ever the First Mate held the wheelE
And ever the ship rushed onN2
-
-
Fair Ruth knelt down in that grim gloomC
She prayed beneath her breathJ
God carry me o er this dread seaE
That seems the Sea of DeathJ
She ceased and lo a lurid glowE
O er that dark water spreadN
And in the blackness burned afarO2
A line of bloody redN
-
What lights are yon the Captain saidN
The First Mate answered thenP2
No lights that ever shone uponN2
The world of living menP2
-
Down on your knees the parson criedZ
Thank God for all is wellE
The First Mate laughed Those lights they areO2
The harbour lights of HellE
-
On flew the ship to every lipB
An ashen pallor cameC
For all might see that suddenlyE
The sea had turned to flameC
-
The lights were near the Sea of FearH
Amid the silence direQ2
On that dread shore broke evermoreR2
In soundless foam of fireS2
-
Oh what are yon gray ghosts and wanN2
The parson cried who seemC
With coloured strings of beads to playE
As in a dreadful dreamC
-
Damned souls the First Mate said they sitT2
And count through endless yearsU2
The moments of EternityE
On beads of burning tearsV2
-
Then Who are you the parson saidN
That talk so free of HellE
My name is Satan he repliedZ
Have I not steered you wellE
-
Back back the yards the Captain criedZ
Then quoth the false First MateW
Like many more who sight this shoreR2
You back your yards too lateW
-
There are the dear deceased you mournedW2
With such exceeding zestX2
They call you whoso freely goesY2
E en yet may save the restX2
-
One pale ghost waved the vessel backZ2
With gestures sad and dumbC
Fair Ruth has plunged into the seaE
My love my love I comeC
-
-
All in a moment shone the sunX
Blue gleamed the sky and seaE
The brave old ship upon the wavesA3
Was dancing merrilyE
And merrily to sound of bellsB3
To her old port full soonC3
The In Memoriam that went forthJ
Returned the HoneymoonC3
-
There o er their grog sea captains stillE
Her wondrous story tellE
And how her Captain backed his yardsD3
A biscuit throw from HellE
