There is a saying of renownA
God made the country man the townA
Well everybody to his tradeB
But man likes best the thing he madeB
The town has little space to spareC
The country has both space and airC
The town's confined the country freeD
Yet spite of all the town for meD
-
For when the hills are grey and night is fallingE
And the winds sigh drearilyF
I hear the city calling calling callingE
With a voice like the great seaD
-
I used to think I'd like to beD
A hermit living lonesomelyF
Apart from human care or kenG
Afar from all the haunts of menG
Then I would read in Nature's bookH
And drink clear water from the brookH
And live a life of sweet contentI
In hollow tree or cave or tentI
-
This was a dream of callow YouthJ
Which always overleaps the truthJ
And thinks fond fool it is the sumK
Of things that are and things to comeK
But now when youth has gone from meD
I crave for genial companyD
For Nature wild I still have zestL
But human nature I love bestL
-
I know that hayseed in the hairC
Than grit and grime is healthierM
And that the scent of gums is farN
More sweet than reek of pavement tarN
I know too that the breath of kineD
Is safer than the smell of wineD
I know that here my days are freeD
But ah the city calls to meD
-
Let Zimmerman and all his broodO
Proclaim the charms of SolitudeO
I'd rather walk down Hunter streetP
And meet a man I like to meetP
And talk with him about old timesQ
And how the market is for rhymesQ
Between two drinks than hold communeD
Upon a mountain with the moonD
A soft wind in the gully deepR
Is singing all the trees to sleepR
And in the sweet air there is balmS
And Peace is here and here is CalmS
God knows how these I yearned to findT
Yet I must leave them all behindT
And rise and go come sun come rainD
Back to the Sorceress againD
-
For at the dawn or when the night is fallingE
Or at noon when shadows fleeD
I hear the city calling calling callingE
Through the long lone hours to meD
