Spring Dirge Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCADEED FGHI JKKJ LMML KJJK NOON MPPM JKKJ

A child came singing through the dusty townA
A song so sweet that all men stayed to hearB
Forgetting for a space their ancient fearC
Of evil days and death and fortune s frownA
She sang of Winter dead and Spring new bornD
In the green fields beyond the far hills boundE
And how this fair Spring coming blossom crownedE
Would cross the city s threshold on the mornD
-
And each caged bird in every house anighF
Even as she sang caught up the glad refrainG
Of Love and Hope and fair days come againH
Till all who heard forgot they had to dieI
-
And all the ghosts of buried woes were laidJ
That heard the song of this sweet sorceressK
The Past grew to a dream of old distressK
And merry were the hearts of man and maidJ
-
So at the first faint blush of tender dawnL
Spring stole with noiseless steps through the gray gloomM
And men knew only by a strange perfumeM
That she had softly entered and withdrawnL
-
But ah the lustre of her violet eyesK
Was dimmed with tears for her sweet singing maidJ
Whose voice would sound no more in shine or shadeJ
To charm men s souls at set of sun or riseK
-
For there with dews of dawn upon her hairN
Like a fair flower plucked and flung awayO
Dead in the street the little maiden layO
Who gave new life to hearts nigh dead of careN
-
Alas must this be still the bitter doomM
Awaiting those the finer souled of earthP
Who make for men a morning song of mirthP
While yet the birds are dumb amid the gloomM
-
They walk on thorny ways with feet unshodJ
Sing one last song and die as that song diesK
There is no human hand to close their eyesK
And very heavy is the hand of GodJ
