Poncé De Léon Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHCH IJGJ GKLK KMDM NOGO APAP QMDM

By a black wharf I stood latelyA
When the night was at its noonB
Keen malicious stars were shiningC
And a wicked white faced moonB
-
And I saw a stately vesselD
Built in fashion quaint and oldE
From her masthead in the moonlightF
Hung a flag of faded goldE
-
Black with age her masts and spars wereG
Black with age her ropes and railsH
Like a ghost through cere cloths gazingC
Shone the white moon through her sailsH
-
Not a movement stirred the stillnessI
Not a sound the silence brokeJ
Save alone the livid waterG
Lapping round her sides of oakJ
-
Then to her unseen commanderG
Spake I as to one I knewK
Don Juan Ponc de L onL
I have waited long for youK
-
Take me with you I implore youK
Take me with you on your questM
For the Fount of Youth EternalD
For the Islands of the BlestM
-
Then above the bulwarks ancientN
I beheld a head ariseO
And the moon with ghastly glimmerG
Lit its sad and hollow eyesO
-
Grieved am I se or and sorryA
Very courteously it saidP
That I may not take you with meA
But I only take the DeadP
-
These alone may dare the voyageQ
These alone sail on the questM
For the Fount of Youth EternalD
For the Islands of the BlestM
