I sit upon my balcony | B |
That overlooks the sparkling sea | B |
Serenly gay and cool and bland | C |
With pipe in mouth and pen in hand | C |

This life I think is beautiful | D |
When at the jug I take a pull | E |
The harbor shines like azure silk | F |
The claret tastes like mother's milk | F |
Then to the pipe I turn again | G |
And then I trifle with the pen | G |

The red faced neighbors townward go | H |
The air is in a furnace glow | H |
I watch them scorching as they pass | I |
Like flies beneath a burning glass | I |
Each clutching at the red hot hour | J |
For coin their folly turns me sour | J |

The Business Man may fret and sweat | K |
In his black coat for etiquette | L |
And grow in shop and office old | M |
And gather wrinkles with his gold | M |
I sit in shirt sleeves cool and bland | C |
With pipe in mouth and pen in hand | C |

The white clouds idle they as I | N |
Like dreaming gods at leisure lie | N |
Upon the hill crests Smoke upcurls | I |
From chimneys lazily and girls | I |
Below me with bare brown arms fine | O |
Are pegging linen on a line | O |

The great ships from the world outside | P |
Steam slowly in with stately pride | P |
Their giant screws now gently spin | Q |
'Tis good to watch them gliding in | Q |
From East and West and North and South | A |
With jug in hand and pipe in mouth | A |

These visions fill me with content | R |
And I remember not the rent | R |
When with cool breezes comes the night | S |
It will be time enough to write | S |
Then you shall see me start the band | C |
With pipe in mouth and pen in hand | C |
