The day and its delights are doneA
So all delights and days expireB
Down in the dim sad West the sunA
Is dying like a dying fireC
-
The fiercest lances of his lightD
Are spent I watch him droop and dieE
Like a great king who falls in fightD
None dared the duel of his eyeE
-
Living but now his eye is dimF
The eyes of all may stare at himF
-
How lovely in his strength at mornG
He orbed along the burning blueH
The blown gold of his flying hairI
Was tangled in green tress d treesJ
And netted in the river sandK
In gleaming links of amber clearL
But all his shining locks are shornG
His brow of its bright crown is bareI
The golden sceptre leaves his handK
And deeper darker grows the hueH
Of the dim purple draperiesJ
And cloudy banners round his bierM
-
O beautiful rose hearted dawnN
O splendid noon of gold and blueH
Is this wan glimmer all of youH
Where are the blush and bloom ye gaveO
To laughing land and smiling seaP
The swift lights that did flash and shiverC
In diamond rain upon the riverC
And set a star in each blue waveO
Where are the merry lights and shadowsQ
That danced through wood and over lawnN
And flew across the dewy meadowsQ
Like white nymphs chased by satyr loversR
Faded and perished utterlyP
-
All delicate and all rich colourC
In flower and cloud on lawn and leaP
On butterfly and bird and beeP
A little space and all are goneN
And darkness like a raven hoversR
Above the death bed of the dayS
-
-
-
So when the long last night draws onT
And all the world grows ghastly grayS
We see our beautiful and braveO
Wither and watch with heavy sighsU
The life light dying in their eyesU
The love light slowly fading outV
Leaving no faint hope in their placeW
But only on each dear wan faceW
The shadow of a weary doubtV
The ashen pallor of the graveO
-
O gracious morn and golden noonX
With what fair dreams did ye departY
Beloved so well and lost so soonX
I could not fold you to my breastZ
I could not hide you in my heartY
I saw the watchers in the WestZ
Sad shrouded shapes with hands that wringA2
And phantom fingers beckoningA2
