To the sea I took them down | A |
And I threw them in the wave | B |
That engulfed them like a grave | B |

Swiftly then I plied the oar | C |
With a light heart to the shore | C |
- | |
But behind me came my foes | D |
Like a nine days corpse each rose | D |
- | |
And a ghastly sight to see | E |
Clutched the boat and grinned at me | E |
- | |
With a heavy heart alack | F |
To the land I bore them back | F |
- | |
Not in Water or in Wine | G |
Can I drown these cares of mine | G |
- | |
But some day for good and sure | H |
I shall bury them secure | H |
- | |
Where the soil is rich and brown | A |
With a stone to keep them down | A |
- | |
And to let their end be known | I |
Have my name carved on the stone | I |
- | |
So that passers by may say | J |
Here lie cares that had their day | J |

And sometimes by moonlight wan | K |
I may sit that stone upon | K |
- | |
With a spectre s solemn phlegm | L |
In my shroud and laugh at them | L |
- | |
Or who knows when all is said | M |
Maybe weep because they re dead | M |
