Bacchanalian Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFF GHGHII FJFJKK KLKLMM MNMNKK COCOPP

I pity him who has not swungA
The Thyrsus in the airB
And followed Bacchus blithe and youngA
With vine leaves in his hairB
And heard the Maenads singC
And the mad cymbals ringC
-
I pity those who have to walkD
In sober ways and sadE
And keep a guard upon their talkD
Lest men should think them madE
Or careless speech should showF
The felon thought belowF
-
When in my goblet blithe and gayG
The beaded bubbles winkH
For all poor souls like this I prayG
That they may learn to drinkH
And like a rose in rainI
Open shut heart and brainI
-
Who does not drink he does not knowF
And he will never findJ
What merry fellows live belowF
The surface of his mindJ
These other men to meK
Are right good companyK
-
If beings of MythologyK
Could live at my commandsL
Briareus I'd choose to beK
Who had a hundred handsL
And every hand of mineM
Would hold a pint of wineM
-
And of those beakers ninety nineM
With white wine and with redN
Should brim for dear old friends of mineM
The living and the deadN
By Pluto there would beK
A noble revelryK
-
Then let us unto Bacchus singC
Evoe up and downO
For Bacchus is the wisest kingC
Who ever wore a crownO
His vine leaves hide from viewP
More wit than Plato knewP
